Courtroom drama took an unusual turn in Springfield, Illinois when a man sentenced for a minor offence received a community service sentence involving gardening — and his reaction quickly went viral.

The defendant, Howard Mills, was handed the sentence after pleading guilty to petty theft. The judge, hoping for a productive alternative to jail, assigned him community garden and park maintenance work.

Howard, who has struggled with mobility due to his weight, looked visibly disheartened.

“I… I can barely get around,” he reportedly said, slumping in his chair. “How am I supposed to do this?”
