Former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, once celebrated worldwide as the “Blade Runner,” has been released from prison after serving almost nine years for the killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius, now 37, was convicted of murder after shooting Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door in 2013 — a crime that shocked the world and ended his sporting career. Following multiple appeals, he was handed a sentence of 13 years and five months.
On parole rules in South Africa, inmates can be freed after serving at least half their term. Pistorius met those conditions and was released earlier this year, though he remains under strict supervision until 2029. His parole conditions include programs on anger management and gender-based violence, as well as restrictions on public appearances.
The Steenkamp family expressed disappointment but acknowledged the parole process, saying no legal outcome could ever bring Reeva back.
Once a symbol of inspiration on the track, Pistorius now faces a future under watchful eyes, with many debating whether justice has truly been served.
