A 12-year-old boy has written a powerful letter to a judge, pleading for the woman accused of murdering his father not to be released on bond.
The boy, whose father was the man seen in a viral video angrily confronting a Black family moving into his neighborhood, is now grieving the loss of his dad — but says that releasing the alleged killer would be “dangerous” and “unfair.”
The emotional letter, read aloud in court this week, left many in tears — and sparked a new wave of outrage around the case.
“She took my dad from me,” the letter reads. “I don’t want her to be out living life while we have to go on without him.”
The boy’s father, who has not been publicly named due to legal reasons involving the minor, was fatally shot days after the video of his racially charged tirade went viral. The woman accused in the shooting — whose identity is being withheld pending trial — was arrested shortly after and is now facing charges of second-degree murder.
What We Know So Far
According to court records, the shooting happened during a heated altercation just blocks from the original incident. While details remain limited, police have confirmed the woman was armed and fired a fatal shot following a “dispute that turned violent.”
She has since filed a motion for bond, requesting to be released while awaiting trial. That request is what prompted the boy’s emotional letter — one that prosecutors say “should be impossible to ignore.”
Community Divided, But a Child Left Fatherless
The case has polarized public opinion. Some have condemned the victim’s behavior in the viral video, pointing out the racist comments he made toward the Black family. Others say no amount of offensive language justifies vigilante violence.
But for many, this isn’t about sides — it’s about a grieving child now growing up without a parent.
“He was my dad. I still loved him even when he was angry. I still love him now that he’s gone,” the letter continues. “Please don’t let her out.”
Courtroom witnesses said the boy’s mother sat beside him, holding his hand as the letter was read aloud. Some attendees wept openly.
The Legal Battle Ahead
The judge has not yet ruled on the bond request, but prosecutors say the boy’s statement should weigh heavily in the decision.
“She ended a life. A father. A man with a family,” said the District Attorney. “We cannot forget that.”
Meanwhile, the Johnson family — the Black family originally targeted by the victim — released a short statement offering condolences to the child.
“No child should lose a parent, no matter the circumstances,” they wrote. “We are keeping him in our prayers.”
A Tragedy With No Winners
This case has become a flashpoint for conversations around race, violence, and justice in America. But at the heart of it all is a 12-year-old boy who just wants to make sure his father’s death isn’t treated like a headline — but as the life-shattering loss it truly is.
The judge is expected to make a decision on bond in the coming days.
